Sustainability — Doing Our Part

As a company that makes its living from the land, we have a huge stake in keeping our environment healthy. In every product we produce Decas considers the impact on fragile wetlands that have been entrusted to us. That means operating all facilities with sensitivity to and reverence for nature and the environment. Environmental stewardship has been at the core of our agricultural philosophy since our founding in the 1930's. Decas recognizes the relationship between a healthy, productive environment, and a healthy productive company.

Decas Sustainability Initiatives:

We protect rare and endangered plants and animals living on our 9 farms in southeast Massachusetts by maintaining over 450 acres of open space and by providing habitat. Integrated Pest Management is used on all agricultural properties.

We are certified organic manufacturers of cranberry products.

Provide cultural management support for over a dozen contracted organic cranberry growers.

Save electricity by recently converting 1/4 million cu. ft. of manufacturing and warehouse space to high efficiency lighting.

Conserve and protect groundwater with closed loop manufacturing water supply on site: groundwater supply, filtration, wastewater treatment, groundwater recharge.

50% reduction of water used in manufacturing over last 5 years through waste minimization – all while increasing our manufacturing capacity.

On-site wastewater treatment plant utilizes captured methane from the anaerobic treatment unit to fuel its boiler. Electrical co-generation feasibility study completed for this facility.

Process over 1250 tons of organic waste annually through company permitted composting facility while providing organics disposal options for area farms, municipalities and businesses.
