Dear Market Reader,

Attached is a press release from Medical Brands and Decas Botanical Synergies.  Medical Brands is a company based out of The Netherlands that specializes in a classification of products called "medical devices".  In the release they announce a new product called Cranberry-Active™ which is the first and only cranberry product to be registered as a medical device.  The medical device registration allows them to make strong product health claims such as "Prevents UTIs" and "Treats UTIs".  Later this month, Medical Brands and DBS will present this new innovation at a speaking engagement at the Vitafoods show in Geneva.

Every decade or so our company re-positions itself to meet new challenges resulting from evolving marketplace conditions. In the mid 1990’s we transformed ourselves from a company that only marketed fresh cranberries to both the retail and the industrial market, to a company that manufactures cranberry ingredients such as sweetened dried cranberries and cranberry concentrate. Several years later we formed a subsidiary, Decas Botanical Synergies (DBS) to produce and market cranberry based nutraceutical products. DBS has gone on to develop a variety of products that have had great success in this emerging market. Today, DBS is the leading cranberry nutraceutical company in the world.

As I write this, we are once again meeting the most recent challenges of new consumer trends by developing and launching an exciting new line of products that will add value to our company and our grower returns. We are expanding our highly credible Paradise Meadow Fresh Fruit retail brand by adding retail SDC’s in a variety of consumer friendly sizes (6oz., 12oz., 32 oz.). Retail SDC’s will also be available in Private Label brands.

New cranberry products are now being introduced that are exclusively available from Decas. Off to a great start is our Reduced Sugar SDC’s that we call LeanCrans and offered as an ingredient to the industrial market and in Paradise Meadow retail packaging (9 oz., 24 oz.).

Our nutraceutical line of cranberry powders features our whole cranberry powder called PACran. PACran has now achieved three successful human clinical trials and is the leading cranberry health product available as a cranberry supplement, or as an ingredient used to fortify other food products.

These products and many more to come will be featured on this website as we continue to report on all of our initiatives both new and old.

Lastly, Decas will highlight our international capabilities by having a global map and welcoming international visitors in various languages.

Keep posted to this website and we will keep you informed not only about Decas Products and marketing news but about the state of our industry, the upcoming 2011 cranberry harvest and all the new trends and cranberry news as reported by the Food News Media.

NutraingredientsUSA.com’s Nathan Gray shared the results of an interesting and encouraging study associating cranberry juice with protection from serious staph infections like toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and MRSA. Researchers from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute reported that cranberry juice cocktail blocked a strain of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) from beginning the process of infection.

TSS and MRSA explained:

According to Wikipedia, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_shock_syndrome) ; symptoms of TSS vary depending on the underlying cause. TSS resulting from infection with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus typically manifests in otherwise healthy individuals with high fever, accompanied by low blood pressure, malaise and confusion, which can rapidly progress to stupor, coma, and multi-organ failure. MRSA is a bacterium responsible for several difficult-to-treat infections in humans and is especially troublesome in hospitals where patients with open wounds, invasive devices and weakened immune systems are at greater risk of infection than the general public.

Although this research did not answer all questions associated with the phenomenon, it poises a significant opportunity for further investigation and promise for an effective coping with staff infections. To read the full article, please visit NutraingredientsUSA.com.
